Take It To The Hoop! Who Invented Basketball?

Liliana Reynoso, Author

Everyone knows that basketball is a team sport which has two teams opposing one another on a court, shooting a basketball through the defender’s hoop while preventing the opposing team from shooting through their own hoop. But do they know who invented this sport and the backstory of it all? Well if you don’t i’m going to tell you all about what basketball is all about. Basketball is the only major American sport that has a clearly identifiable inventor. It was invented in December 1891 by the Canadian clergyman, educator, and physician James Naismith.

Naismith introduced the game when he was an instructor at the Young Men’s Christian Association Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts. Naismith wrote the sport’s original 13 rules as part of a December 1891 class assignment. The first game had nine players on each side  side, and tried to toss a soccer ball into peach baskets which were nailed to the balconies at the ends of a gymnasium. When a basket was made someone had to climb a ladder and take it out of the basket. After they had their first public match in 1892, Naismith’s game started to spread quickly through the global network of YMCA’s.

Basketball’s first professional league was founded in 1898, seven years before nets finally replaced the sport’s original peach baskets. Comparing basketball games in 1892 to today’s games shows that a lot has changed. So the next time you play this sport think about the story behind it.
